Terry Fox Run 2010

This year marks the 30th anniversary for Terry Fox Run, also my 4th consecutive year going for the run :)

Instead of Lake Garden, the run is held in Taman Tasik Titiwangsa this year. It has been donkey years (more than 20 years!) since my last visit to Taman Tasik Titiwangsa.

As usual, a lot of people turned out for the event ... all for a good cause, besides having fun. Weather was good and just perfect for a run, although I thought that it would rain (for the little drizzles before the run starts).

Most people walked throughout the run due to the narrower walkway compared to those in Lake Garden. It's not a competitive run anyway, so people can choose to run, walk, bike or even skate - most important is the fun !

Hong Kong - Happy Valley Racecourse

Although Day 1 plan on shopping and getting some philatelic items did not materialise, we somehow still managed to make it to the Wednesday night horse-racing.

Happy Valley Racecourse (跑馬地馬場) is one of the most famous horse racing venues in the world. Horse racing is a pivotal part of the people of Hong Kong, and paying a visit to the racecourse is something not to be missed. One gets to capture and experience this part of Hong Kong's "life" and "local culture" here.

Beer tents and food stands are also available, thus making it a hangout spot as well.

From Causeway Bay MTR Station, get out from Exit A. Walk along Wong Nai Chung Road towards Happy Valley Racecourse.

Alternatively, if you do not wish to walk, from Causeway Bay, hop on a tram marked "Happy Valley" and get off at Happy Valley Terminus. Each trip (i.e. "hop on") cost HKD2.00.

Hong Kong Getaway

First getaway for the year ... almost not making it. Our regular cab driver, someone whom we have been using the service for the past few years, did not turn up to send us to the airport. Reason being he has forgotten that he needs to pick us up - what an excuse!

We ended up getting another cab, and we managed to arrive at the airport 45 minutes before departure. Unfortunately, we still missed our flight. We were not allowed to check-in as the gate has been closed. As we purchased our flight ticket at promotional rate, the ticket has been forfeited for missing the flight - no refund, no replacement. The only compliment that we have is that only one-way ticket got forfeited as we have purchased our to and return flight separately.

Do not wish to have a "screw-up" trip, we forked out RM500 each (one-way ticket though) for the next flight to Hong Kong. Supposed to fly MAS, but we ended up flying Air Asia (ha!). Nevertheless, still thanks to Air Asia, at least we can minimise the "damage" in purchasing another ticket :)

There we were, travelling from KLIA to LCCT via bus and waited for another 3 hours for the next flight to Hong Kong.

There goes our Day 1 plan on shopping and visiting the post office for some philatelic items :(

Anyway, lesson learnt, we will never go for regulars anymore. For the upcoming trips, we swear that we will call up cab company for a cab :p

Other than the above hiccup, we still have a great trip after all. Would be sharing these in the next few posts, but let's get started with ...

Located in Tin Shui Wai (天水圍), New Territories. It's far from tourist areas such as Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay, definitely, but it's still easily accessible via public transport. Hong Kong has very good MTR system, thus making going around such an easy task :)

We booked for our accommodation during MATTA Fair at a very good deal - about RM700 for 4 nights accommodation. For that rate, we expect to get a small room, but it came as a surprise when we were given a suite! Needless say more, here are some pictures to share ...

Done with facelift, I mean for this blog.

Have chosen something simple, something blue. Although my favourite colour is pink, I suddenly have the inclination to go for something blue when I decided on this template. Hmm, does that reflect the mood at the time of choosing the theme colour? Feeling blue, eh?

Well, definitely not. I do find blue a soothing colour, and wanted to have something simple, blue simply complements that.

Although blue often represents sadness, on the other hand, it can represent happiness and optimism. Else, why do clear days with blue skies are usually used to symbolise happiness, rather than say, stormy rainy days?

Well, it has been months since my last published post ... sometime February this year. I guess it's due to this one constant factor : JUST BEING LAZY ... and this one constant cause : OVERWORK, thus causing the laziness to spend time on blogging after a day's work (ha!).

I do have some lil' tales (i.e. "been there" story telling) plus pictures to share from the last few trips made this year : Hong Kong in March, Hong Kong Revisit in May and Krabi, which is recently. Due to this push factor, guess it's time to revisit this abandon site of mine and let the story telling sessions get started.

Facelift. Seems that more blog template designs are available now, nicer stuffs too. Perhaps it's time for a facelift?

Spring Cleaning. Some posts have actually been spammed, so it's spring cleaning time as well. Also to clean up and remove links to discontinued sites - no point having them there when they get you to nowhere :)

Completion. A couple of posts on my Bali trip last year actually get started but did not get completed - a beginning without an ending. Hmm, this is definitely not good, so it's also time to complete these unfinished lil' tales.

Lastly, back for more? More lil' tales of life and times? Hope so, but this would remain a question as of now, but do hope that it would soon be a remark instead ... will try though :)

Have been quite a "long" while since I last blog. My work has been taking much of my time these few months, thus have not been able to spend time sharing stuffs here.

Nevertheless, let's start the first post of the year with some simple Chinese New Year greetings.

May the Year of the Tiger bring you health, wealth, love, double prosperity, double happiness and the best of everything.

Terry Fox Run 2009

My 3rd year going for the Terry Fox Run ... for charity, for a little bit of good deed.

As usual, didn't really run, but rather walk, while having a chat and catching up with my friend along the way :p

A little bit of achievement this year, managed to recruit 2 new members to the run - my manager as well as the HR Manager of my company. It seems that they enjoyed the run ... and they did mention that they will go for the run again next year. Another little good deed done, huh?

After the run, as usual, I do look forward to dim sum lunch, a "tradition" my friend and I have been practising for the last 2 years :p

A little good deed plus a good meal thereafter do make my day :)

Stress vs. Vacation

This Occasion Called Wedding Dinner

Wedding dinner - a ceremony to celebrate the union of two people, we call them a couple.

What else besides celebrating the union?

Reunion, perhaps, especially if it's a wedding of someone you know since childhood or schooldays. That's the time when you get to meet up with long lost friends, or friends whom you have not met for quite a while ... all those catching up and updating each other with what has happened the last few years since we see each other.

I have been to a few of such wedding these few years, and it has been really, really great to be able to reconnect with long lost friends since schooldays.

If it is a wedding of a colleague from your previous workplace that you are attending, then that's also a potential reunion time. However, if it's a wedding of a colleague in your current workplace, I would say that it's nothing much different from those daily lunch time that you have. You might end up sitting with the same bunch of people, talking about the same old topic which you discuss during lunch time. Worse still if you talk about work during the dinner :p

Someone I know of told me her wedding dinner somehow looks like a company's annual dinner. Half of the hall consists of colleagues from her workplace while the other half colleagues from her husband's workplace. So when it comes to yum sing (i.e. cheers) time, seems that both sides tried to outperform each other by cheering louder and louder (ha!).

What happen if you attend a wedding dinner whereby you do not know anyone else besides the bride and bridegroom? Well, you do have a choice of not attending. However, if you choose to attend, you have the choice to only savour the food and wine, or to get to know new friends.

I have just attended such a wedding this evening (although with a little twist for the fact that I still know one person there and not totally being alone). It's a wedding of someone whom I have known for at least half a decade. During the wedding, not only I choose to savour the food and a little wine, I also choose to get to know new friends. Usually if the person sitting next to you is equally alone just like you, chances of being able to make new friends are pretty good :p

Next, karaoke, an interesting component that worth a mention. Although not all wedding has karaoke session, for those who have, it's definitely a showtime for people who are not too shy to sing their lungs out. We don't really care if the singing is up to a certain standard (not necessary professional standard though). It's a different case if someone is merely "screaming" or singing out of tune, it's quite a torture, isn't it? Also, say someone is singing songs like "Un-break My Heart" or "Another Sad Love Song" ... not quite appropriate for the occasion, eh?

Oh, yeah, before ending this post, may this friend of mine whom I have known for at least half a decade live happily ever after with his lovely wife ... Congratulations to Kenny & Vivian on your marriage :)

Somehow It's Still Different

Had a Ramadan buka puasa dinner at one of the resorts this evening. If you were to ask me how the dinner was, my frank answer would be it does fill the stomach but not entirely great when it comes to taste bud satisfaction.

Well, is it due to the food really being that "ungreat" or is it due to my taste bud then?

Remember that years and years back (when I had just started working and earning a meagre amount of income), having a buffet meal in hotel was something I truly enjoyed and looked forward to. Food seems to be great and satisfied my taste bud entirely.

It is quite interesting to hear from one of my friends once that he does not have the same amount of satisfaction and "feeling" when he eats those butter cookies in those blue tin can nowadays, as compared to when he had them during his childhood. It's even more interesting to hear him mentioning "perhaps we could not really afford it then, that's why we treasured and enjoyed those cookies entirely during childhood". Deep within my little heart, I totally agree, though.

Well, perhaps the food during the buka puasa dinner isn't that "ungreat" after all, but somehow, it's still different ...

09.09.09 ...

Another special day of the century. Am sure you would know what I mean - it's the 9th day of the 9th month of the 9th year of the century. Three more of such special day to go before the next century, which obviously none of us who is currently reading this would ever live to see such again next century :p

What do people choose to do on such a special day? Well, getting married, if they are not too particular with the fact that currently is still the 7th month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. For the number 9 also refers to "forever" in Chinese (for those who do not know, "forever" sounds the same as "nine" in Chinese). Triple 9, well, doesn't that mean forever, forever and forever then?

How do I spend this day of the century, you might ask. Nothing extraordinary. Perhaps it's just another day for me. Just like any other weekday, woke up early and obediently drove to work to earn a living. Don't mistaken that I don't enjoy doing such. Remember that you need to treasure what you currently have, although that does not mean that you should stop pursuing for something better :)

Anyway, one thing for sure is that today is a late night at work. It's the busiest time of the year. Plans for the coming year is being laid down now. Plans that lead the direction for the coming one year. Hmm, sounds important, doesn't it?

Although am not spending this day in a special way, but am pretty sure the time spent is definitely on something fruitful and important :)

Am back to the company which I have just left for a final handover now. Suddenly I just miss coming back to this place. Don't ask me why I feel this way, it's just a sudden feeling that I have.

Human is just a funny being. When you have it, you don't treasure it. When you no longer have it, how you long to have it back. What an irony ...

Well, nevertheless, am very sure that there would be lots of challenges awaiting me at my new workplace. Already had a day full of meetings and phone conferences on my second day there, which was yesterday, unfortunately. But I am pretty sure that I can make it (well, need to give myself the confidence to move on, right?)

My friend, do treasure what you have presently and not forgetting to lay the path for your future days :)

A Molar Lesser

Finally have taken the courage to have my "problematic" wisdom tooth extracted this morning.

Being a member of the "Me Not Going to Dentist" Clan, I have been trying to avoid going to the dentist to have this wisdom tooth removed for the past 2 years.

Guess it has reached an unbearable stage now. This tooth has been giving me problems at least 75% of the time these few months. This tooth has grown to a size long enough to "bite" the inner wall of my mouth each time I chew my food ... imagine how painful that is. How to enjoy my favourite food lah?

Now, with this tooth gone, rest well for a few days ... would be back soon to enjoy all the gastronomic sessions ahead ... yes!

Bangkok - All About Shopping

For those who wish to have their retail therapy (i.e. shopping) sessions in Bangkok, besides Chatuchak and night markets, there are a few shopping malls for you to choose from.

Although I don't really shop when I travel (as I prefer sightseeing), somehow I still manage to slot in some sessions in between to pay a visit to a few of the shopping malls in Bangkok ... more for some quick window shopping :p

Centralworld

Currently the largest shopping mall in Southeast Asia, you can find the finest fashion stores, global brands, specialty stores and all kinds of luxury designer lifestyle goods here.

Equivalent standard to KLCC and Pavilion KL.

Getting there :

If you are travelling on Sukhumvit Line, alight at either the Chit Lom or Siam BTS Station.
If you are travelling on Silom Line, alight at Siam BTS Station.

Platinum Fashion Mall

Caters especially to wholesale clothing, this mall has six floors which are filled with small outlets - most of them specialising in women's clothing and fashion accessories.

Since this is a wholesale mall, you can get items at very reasonable prices - provided you buy larger quantities, usually three items and up. Some outlets allow mix and match.

No fitting rooms are available for you to try the clothes though.

Equivalent standard to Sungei Wang (although Sungei Wang not really of wholesale in nature, the crowd is that of Sungei Wang)

It's actually located near Centralworld. Walk pass Centralworld, cross the canal, turn left and walk a few metres up. Platinum Fashion Mall is on your left.

Bangkok - Chatuchak Market

Day 4 AM

A flea market with more than 10,000 stalls on a 35-acres land ... that's Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok, the world's biggest weekend market. Once inside the market, you would be caught up in a world of bursting crowds and stalls stretching as far as the eye can see.

Let's head to Chatuchak Market :p

The "published" opening hours for the market are from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday. Having said that, we still see some stalls setting up and arranging their goods by the time we reached there at around 9:30 am. Apparently, it's also open on Friday, however as a market for wholesalers.

Chatuchak Market usually gets very warm and hot by noon, so it is recommended to go early when it is a bit cooler. Was pretty lucky on the day we visited Chatuchak Market ... it wasn't a sunny day, yet it didn't rain, the weather (and thus temperature) is just perfect for one to spend a day there :)

The market offers an endless selection of antiques, intricate wood carvings and handicrafts, decorative ornaments, soft fluffy toys, bags, household wares, clothes and accessories ... just to name a few. You would definitely be spoilt with such various choices :p

Another real fun part when you shop in Chatuchak Market, besides the various choices available, is the fact that you can bargain with each stall you are interested in. Although the prices here are generally lower than the street stalls and night market, you can still bargain here. I did some bargaining and managed to get those stuffs which I want at a reasonably low price :)

Don't worry, the quality is still up to expected standard, despite the low prices :)

If you need to fill up your stomach or to quench your thirst, Chatuchak Market has an endless selection of food and drinks ~ rice, noodles, Thai-style fast food, iced refreshments ...

Was told that if you have set an eye on something which you like and managed to bargain at a good price, don't think twice but to get it. With so many stalls around, it would be quite difficult for you to return to the same shop to get what you want. Having said that, I actually managed to track and return to a stall to get something which I did not get earlier :p

If you are lost, not to worry, as maps of the market are available. A helpful and informative personnel (I suppose it's one, as I only saw one) is there to help out :)

To sum it up ... it's a shopper paradise not to be missed when you are in Bangkok.

Getting there :

Easiest is to take BTS or MRT.
If you take the BTS, alight at Mo Chit Station and follow the signboard to Chatuchak Market. The walk to the market takes about 5 minutes.

If you take the MRT, alight at Kampheng Phet Station, which is directly in front of Chatuchak Market.

Another must visit spot for me would be the Philatelic Museum or Centre, if there is one in the city or town I visit. Being a philatelic lover and collector, I would feel that the trip would be incomplete for not dropping by :)

Bangkok - Dumnoen Saduak Floating Market

Day 3 AM

Woke up early on Day 3 as the itinerary for the first half of the day is to visit Dumnoen Saduak Floating Market, which is located in the Ratchaburi Province, about 105 km away from Bangkok. Since this Floating Market closes about mid-day, coupled with the long distance, you just need to start your journey early.

As Bangkok was once called the "Venice of the East", it is worth to pay a visit to at least one of the floating markets while you are in Bangkok. You get to see the old style and traditional way of selling and buying from small boats.

Being a free and easy trip, instead of joining a local tour, we took a bus from the Southern Bus Terminal to Dumnoen Saduak Floating Market. It took us about 2.5 hours to reach the so-called jetty near the Floating Market.

Take Bus No. 78 to Dumnoen Saduak Floating Market

Once we reached there, we were being approached by a boat tour operator asking us whether we want to hire a boat. The price offered by her is definitely a "cut-throat" tourist rate ~ 800 Baht per person for a 1-hour ride. She kept on pestering us to hire the boat and promoting to us what we would get to experience and see from the boat ride (blah blah blah~). Knowing that this is definitely not a fair and reasonable price to pay for, we did not agree to hire the boat but tried to bargain for a better rate. Yet, we still find it expensive even after some so-called price off given.

We then decided to walk to the Floating Market instead, when at this point of time, she was willing to reduce the rate to 500 Baht per boat. Imagine if there are 2 of us, it's only 250 Baht per person. If there are 3 of us, it's 167 Baht per person. Now, that's a huge difference from the initial rate offered !!! Also, remember to settle the fees before settling off :)

The sight of the Floating Market is something which you rarely get to see. Opened daily, it is routinely crowded with hundreds of vendors and purchasers floating in their boats selling and buying goods. Goods sold include food, fruits, vegetables, handicrafts, paintings and souvenirs, to name a handful.

Price wise, of course, don't expect very good bargain here as it is a tourist spot, and thus you should expect at least a tourist "rate" being charged.

Getting there by bus :
Take Bus No. 78 from the Southern Bus Terminal ~ air-conditioned bus, more comfortable :p
Each trip costs 64 Baht.

Note :
Bus driver drops you at the jetty (where the tour boat operator is) on the trip to the Floating Market. However, to catch the bus back to Bangkok, you would need to walk to the bus "terminal" instead.

From the jetty, walk to the main road (take the left turn at the juncture adjoining the main road). Go straight until you cross the flyover, of which head or "turn" right. The bus "terminal" is in front of the shops there.

You would pass by a police tourist information centre, so if you are lost or unsure on the direction, feel free to drop by and ask for direction :)

Another option ...

For those who prefer to join a local tour to the Floating Market, the tour will probably include another stop to places such as the Rose Garden (where you can see Thai dancing, Thai boxing and a demonstration of a Thai wedding) and Samphan Elephant Farm.

Another place which I would make an effort to go whenever I visit a country is none other but the Hard Rock Café. Being an international chain, having at least an outlet in quite a number of countries, why not pay a visit here, either for a dinner or just to get a memento :)

Bangkok - Wat Arun

Day 2 PM

It's almost 5 p.m. by the time I reached Wat Arun. Sunset is around 6 to 7 p.m. in Bangkok, thus am at the right time to catch the "golden" moment :p

Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of the Dawn, is one of the best known landmark in Bangkok. Located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River in Thonburi, the easiest and common way to get to Wat Arun is via the ferry or boat.

The temple consists of a massive elongated prang (Khmer-style tower) and is surrounded by four smaller prangs, which are decorated by bits of porcelain.

It is possible to walk a limited way up the very steep stairs of the main prang, which gives you a reasonable view of the Chao Phraya River. Being an acrophobic, I only walked up not even mi-way, merely had a little view of the Chao Phraya River.

Some of them are used as small museum and library.

Wat Arun is said best seen from the opposite bank of the river. Well, this is pretty true, especially if you want to get a good shot of sunset. Unfortunately, did not thought of this when I was there ... and thus miss the good shot :p

Getting there :

Due to its location, the best, easiest and most common way is to take the ferry / boat to get to Wat Arun. From the Tha Tien Pier, take a boat to cross the river to the other side of the river where Wat Arun is located. Per boat ride only costs 3 Baht.

Bangkok - Chinatown

Day 2 PM

For me, whenever I go to a country, Chinatown is a place not to be missed. Nearly there is one in each country, so it is a good experience to visit each to have a look at the similarity as well as compare on the differences.

After visiting the Grand Palace, took a ferry and disembarked at Rachavongse Pier to get to Chinatown.

Chinatown district is one of the oldest areas of Bangkok. The Chinese merchants were originally moved to this area when Bangkok was founded on the eastern bank of the Chao Phraya River. This area has a somewhat seedy historical reputation for large numbers of opium dens, brothels (namely the Green Light district), pawnshops and a fondness for gambling.

Unmistakeably it's Chinatown, with all the Chinese signage around :)

Quite a busy place

Today, gold shops and pawnshops are still very popular in Chinatown. The busy Yaowarat Road, Chinatown's main street, has great concentrations of gold shops anywhere. Was told that you can get quite good prices on gold here, however, not having the intention to shop, did not step into any of the gold shops.

It's not only all about gold in Chinatown. For gastronomic lovers, there are plenty of restaurants here, where you can get bird nest soup, dim sum, shark fin soup and other traditional Chinese delicacies at good reasonable price. As for me, wanted to have something light, I went for the bird nest soup only :)

There are actually some other attractions at Chinatown area, such as Wat Traimit, the Temple of the Golden Buddha, which is located at the end of Chinatown's Yaowarat Road, near Hualampong Railway Station. Didn't have much time left, thus have opted this out.

Getting there :

Easiest way of getting there is via ferry. Alight at the Rachavongse (Ratchawong) Pier and walk up Ratchawong Road to Sampaeng Lane or Yaowarat Road, which is just a few hundred metres away.

Bangkok - The Grand Palace

Day 2 - PM

The Grand Palace, the former residence of the Thai monarchy for about 150 years, is located within the same compound as Wat Phra Kaew.

Although it is a grand old dame, people still flock to the Grand Palace to see the beautiful and intricate-detailed architecture. It has several ceremonial halls with exquisite Thai and European architecture that are worth the time to see and enjoy.

The palace is divided into three quarters - the outer quarters, the middle quarters and the inner quarters. Not all halls and areas of the Grand Palace are open to the public. Also, photo-taking is restricted at certain sections and areas in the Grand Palace.

Although the King no longer resides here, the Grand Palace is still very much in use as many royal rituals are performed here by the King every year.

Shutter lovers, not to worry, as there are still great photo opportunities here despite the restriction on photo-taking ...

Bangkok - Wat Phra Kaew

Day 2 PM

Wat Phra Kaew, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is located within the grounds of the Grand Palace.

From Maharaj Pier, you would need to walk a bit to get to Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace. Apparently, it should be nearer to alight at Tha Chang Pier, which we did not do. Else, you can choose to walk from Wat Pho, as they are next to each other.

Plain white tall wall surrounds the temple and Grand Palace compound, so you should not miss it.

Sitting within the temple is the highly revered Emerald Buddha, which is meticulously carved from a single block of jade. The Emerald Buddha sits atop a huge gold altar in the center of the temple. It is a rather small, dark statue, just over 2 feet tall.

Unlike Wat Pho, there are restrictions here when it comes to photo-taking. You are forbidden to take photos and videos inside the temple itself. Exterior photo-taking is fine.

Just like Wat Pho, the architecture of the temple is elaborate and stunningly beautiful and amazing.

Ramakien

There is a model of Angkor Wat within the ground of the temple.

Besides that, murals can be found within the temple area, which depicts scenes from Ramakien, the Thai version of the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana.

Another spot within reach from Tha Tien Pier ~ Tha Tien Market.

Despite being marked as an attraction on the map at the pier, guess that most tourists would still ignore it, as the main attraction would be Wat Pho.

Being on a riverside location, seafood seems to be its dominant product, both fresh and dried, salted varieties. Other products that you can find include fruits, vegetables, food, beverage and not forgetting trinkets and souvenirs :)

Massage services can be found here as well ... some claiming by experts from Wat Pho, some claiming that they are Wat Pho certified or graduate. Well, these might be true since Wat Pho is just next door :)

Bangkok's temples are a unique part of the capital's heart and soul. A visit to Bangkok would be incomplete without paying a visit to these temples. There are quite a number of temples in Bangkok, thus it would be quite daunting to visit all of them.

Have chosen to visit a few of the famous ones, all situated along Chao Phraya River. Besides these temples, have also devoted Day 2 to places within reach from Chao Phraya River.

For only 120 baht, you can get the One Day River Pass, which entitles you to a day of unlimited ferry rides along the river. It also comes with a printable guide which highlights places to visit along the river, as well as the relevant pier to alight. And it also comes with a tour guide in the ferry :)

Tips :

Beware of people telling you that the temple is closed due to "Buddhist Holiday", cleaning in progress or closed for a particular ceremony, and asking if you would wish to see the "Lucky Buddha" instead, as these are all part of some sophisticated gem scam. Instead, the temple is open every day :)

Bangkok - Suan Lum Night Bazaar

Left only a few hours for the day after settling down at friend's place. It's dinner, so there we head to Suan Lum Night Bazaar.

Although there were news few years back that this night bazaar would be closed down in 2007 to make way for new commercial development, this however has not transpired yet.

Open daily from 5pm onwards, the bazaar is not just a place to shop, but also a place to head for a tasty meal.

Was told that you would need to do more bargaining to reach a reasonable price point, thus have opted not to shop at Suan Lum.

Nevertheless, had our first authentic Thai meal here, at this hangout place called Mehang.

Since none of us can speak Thai, my friend called his staff (who is a Thai) to help us to order food through the phone. Hmm, what an "unusual" way of ordering food :p

Ordered the following 4 dishes (don't really remember the exact name) ...

Tempura with cuttlefish in spicy sauce

Tom yam kung

I specifically like the tom yam kung. With coconut milk added, it gives the soup a bit of "milky" taste. Not too spicy ... yet it still gives you the "umph" of having tom yam.

While enjoying the meal, guests are being entertained by live band performance. Quite enjoy it, though I don't really enjoy the language ... well, music is a universal language, isn't it?

Bangkok Getaway

First getaway of the year, and it's Bangkok. Free and easy style and a budget one as well. Managed to get a seat during last MAS promotion (RM2 flight!). Also, saved on accommodation as we get to stay at a friend's place in Bangkok :)

1st day basically spent on travelling and settling down at friend's place in Bangkok. The serviced apartment is actually quite near the city area, however, due to the heavy traffic in Bangkok during peak hours, a 10 minute journey can take up to 30 to 45 minutes.

Bangkok is actually quite a nice place to visit, of course not during this time of demonstrations and protests. It's a place with modern infrastructure and buildings, while beautiful temples with awesome elaborate architecture are also within reach.

Not forgetting the famous Thai traditional massage and mouth-watering authentic tom yam (slurp~).

Getting around Bangkok is quite convenient. You can take either the Sky Train, ferry or taxi. There are plenty of taxi in Bangkok, and they operate on meter system. If a taxi driver tells you that the meter is not working and starts offering you a flat rate, do not fall prey to such excuse as the rate quoted is usually 2 to 3 times higher than the normal rate. Another excuse which I encountered is that taxis do not operate on metre past 10 pm, which is not true at all. It operates on metre system all day long.

Earth Hour 2009

Earth Hour, a global initiative by World Wildlife Fund (WWF), started back in Year 2007. Its objective is to raise awareness on the need to take the necessary action against climate change. Since its inception in 2007, seems that the number of countries participating in this event has increased each year since then.

Held on the last Saturday of March annually, households and businesses are encouraged (I think this is a more appropriate word) to turn off non-essential lights and electrical appliances for one hour.

Earth Hour 2009 was held recently on 28 Mar 2009. Attended a colleague's wedding dinner on the very same day ... instead of the "conventional" opening address you get to hear in a wedding dinner, the groom started off with some message on Earth Hour. And yes, we did have the lights turned off (although for merely 10 to 15 minutes). Candlelit dinner, how romantic that is :)

On a philatelic side, here's a first day cover issued by Australia Post in commemorating this special event of the year ...

The following messages are conveyed in this 3-stamps issue : "Lights Out", "Switch Off" and "Save Energy".

Hope that such yearly event would raise the awareness on the need to protect Mother Earth. Believe that the combined efforts of individuals would make an impact.

The following comic strip is interesting enough to show that people might be so "gung-ho" about turning off the lights for Earth Hour, however, it is "BAU" post Earth Hour. Well, is this what is really happening? I shall leave this to your observation then ...

Fruitful when it comes to catching up with friends ... in fact, some long lost friends. Met up with ex-colleague-friends ~ great time catching up and teasing the regular victim ... hehehe ...

Also, had a gathering with secondary school friends for a hi-tea. And gosh, it has been at least 10 years since I have last seen most of them. As for some, the last time we see each other was perhaps 17 years ago? Hmm, wonder when would the next gathering be ...

With FB being the hit now, guess it's an easier avenue to catch up, eh?

With my level of proficiency in Chinese writing, guess I'd better write in English. It's not that I can't write in Chinese, just that it could sound "grammatically so incorrect" :p

Today is the 3rd day of Chinese New Year. Despite that, am already back at work today. Of course, I would prefer to have a longer break, however, today is a GOOD day to start work for me. Do not wish to take the risk and have bad days in my work for the remaining days in the year, guess it is a wise decision made :)

Some people do say that I am being overly superstitious in believing such, however, I could not be bothered too much. Better be safe than be sorry :)

The drive to office this morning was definitely a pleasant one. It was a smooth "traffic-jam-less" drive. How I wish the traffic is such everyday, but this would never happen :p

Would take leave when the hustle and bustle is back on the road ...

How time flies ...

Today, being the last day of the year, here comes the last blog post of the year as well.

Year 2008 - another challenging year. It's time to wrap up some of the more significant events during the year, of course from an individual perspective ... shall leave the bigger picture to the press :p

The Ups

Had a few of my wish list fulfilled during the year ~ a Coach, a SE handphone, a B.Buffel wallet and of course, my beloved VTEC :)

Had a change in my career, whereby I have finally taken the courage to make a move. Used to lead a team in my previous job, however, in the new chapter of my career, I would need to keep my hands dirty, whereby I would need to do the work myself. A good learning experience, I would say. Not to mention the satisfaction that you get when you get a job well done :)

Continued with my music lesson after having to have stopped playing music for more than 10 years. Had a bit difficulty initially, but I think I have improved a lot since then. At least am much better with the dynamics (i.e. the expressions) even compared to 10 years back. On and off, I do get addicted having fun with the 88 keys :)

Having to have registered as a voter last year, had fulfilled the responsibility as a good citizen by casting my first ever vote during the last General Election :)

Been to Redang, finally. Although I did not really enjoy the trip, however, it is really a nice place that one should consider paying a visit. Do have plan to go there again with another crowd of people, and I am sure that I will enjoy this so-called planned trip :)

Met up with a number of my secondary school friends during one of the weddings I attended. The last time most of us met was more than 5 years ago. Next reunion coming soon ... more to catch up then :)

The Downs

Our beloved cat finally left the family due to kidney failure. After struggling for survival in the vet hospital for a week, he finally left us. It's really a pain in the heart for all of us in the family, but we would forever remember him as the cat which has brought us much joy :

Xiao Bai (i.e. 小白) being the Chinese name of him. Theodore being his English name. "Koot" being his nickname. Just call any of these names, and he knows it ... a real smart cat.

Welcomes me at the door each day when I got back from work. Although you do feel tired after a whole day's of battle at work, after looking at him, there goes all your tiredness.

Remember clearly that there was a few times when my alarm clock malfunction and guess what ... it was Xiao Bai who woke me up, else I would be late for work.

Xiao Bai loves roti canai and potato bread. Will never fail to pat your leg just to request for even a small portion of these.

And always being remembered as the cat with a piggy look-alike body, especially the piggy tail :p

Was hospitalised due to dengue fever. After going through the battle for 6 days in the ward, was discharged on Christmas Eve. Was given the option to either discharge on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day itself. Have opted for Christmas Eve due to the following simple reasons :

Do not wish to celebrate Christmas (although unofficially) in the ward.

Had enough of those torturing blood-taking sessions.

Could not stand a ward mate who do not bother to set the mobile phone at silent cum vibrate mode - The ringtone was quite loud, imagine when you are almost dozing off when the phone suddenly rings ...

On Lil' Tales of Life & Times

Blame it on my laziness, on average, seems that I have blogged lesser this year compared to last year. Haha, seems like KPI not met in a way :p ... shall strive for more posts in Year 2009 :)

Due to being too lazy to write too much, have started with "Snapshot" series if I just wish to share pictures taken. Hope that you have enjoyed them ... and as usual, any comments are welcomed :)

With Year 2009 coming, what do I wish for then?

Hmm, guess most importantly is to wish for good health, not only for myself, but my family members as well as friends.

Also, having to have spend very little time travelling in the past, I do hope to travel more this year. Will try to plan for this, in terms of timing as well as financially :)

Personally, I find that Year 2009 calendar not as nice as that for Year 2008. The one for August looks like a centipede in the making :p

Having said that, I do like the one for June, July, October and November ... simple and nice :)

Although the food in A'Famosa Resort is bad, Melaka, itself is still a place to head for nice food :)

Chinese food, Portuguese food, Nyonya food, just to name a few. Didn't manage to try all during this trip. Here's a few which we have managed to try ...

Satay Celup @ Restoran Capitol Satay

Most of us are pretty familiar with this food known as lok lok, whereby you dip raw food into hot water or soup and sauce thereafter before savouring it. Not forgetting that you usually have it by the roadside, next to the lorry or van or even motorcycle of the seller :p

Melaka has its very own version of lok lok, known as satay celup. No more standing by the roadside, we went to Restoran Capitol Satay, for the satay celup. Instead of dipping into hot water, it's hot peanut sauce, which is being added occasionally for you by the owner.

More hygienic in the sense that you only share the pot of peanut sauce with those you know, unlike the normal lok lok we have, whereby you share the same pot of hot water or soup and sauce with many strangers.

Restoran Capitol Satay is located in Melaka Town (Address : 41, Lorong Bukit Cina, Melaka). It is only opened in the evening from 6 p.m. onwards. Was told that it is closed at 1 a.m. but you are sure to still see the crowd (and queue) even after 1 a.m. - business hours would thus be extended due to the crowd :)

Chicken Rice Ball @ Kedai Kopi Chung Wah

Something that you should not miss when you are in Melaka. I have this each time I step into Melaka.

Being the famous one in Melaka, we need to queue to get into the restaurant. Nothing else that you get to order here, only steamed chicken (no roasted or BBQ variety) and rice ball. Trust me, no pork allowed in the restaurant. Don't think that it is a halal certified outlet, however, pork is still not allowed here.

Also, you are allowed to order once, and that's it. They do not entertain any add-on, so make sure that you order enough portion :)

Restoran Chung Wah is located opposite OCBC Bank, which is at the start of Jonker Street. You are sure to locate it easily :)

Cendol @ Jonker Dessert

Jonker Dessert - The Museum Cafe

Hot day it was, a perfect time for a bowl of cendol. We went to Jonker Dessert 88 for a cool down :p

Located along Jonker Street (Address : 88, Jonker Street, Melaka), it does not only sell cendol, but also sells laksa (baba laksa as well as assam laksa).

Need not write too much on the cendol, a pictorial description might be of more relevant now ...

Look at the gula melaka ... yummy !!!

While enjoying your cendol and laksa, feel free to have a look at some of the artefacts and relics on display in the shop.

Pork Satay along Jonker Street

This being my first time eating pork satay (*pai seh) ... we had pork satay at this restaurant along Jonker Street (forgot to note down the name of the restaurant).

Frankly speaking, I find it nothing much special than the ordinary chicken satay that I used to have in Kajang :p

Nevertheless, it's still a must try when you are in Melaka since it is not quite easy to find pork satay elsewhere.

Due to limited time and space constraint (in the stomach), we did not have Nyonya or Portuguese food this time round ... well, perhaps next visit :)

A' Famosa Resort - The But For

Overall, this trip is quite a pleasant one. Frankly speaking, I do enjoy the whole trip ... but for these ...

First of all, the road signs. No doubt they do have quite comprehensive road signs, which show you the direction to a lot of places within the town, however, the road signs are too small. Also, I just do not understand why they love to plant trees next to the road signs. Almost half of the road signs are covered by trees, which I would say, it is as good as not having such comprehensive road signs.

Being "alien" to Melaka, we would obviously need to rely a lot on the road signs to go around places. Such small road signs, coupled with half covered by trees, have thus contributed to us got lost in Melaka. Imagine that it took us 2 hours from Melaka town to get back to A'Famosa Resort. Coupled with it was past midnight at that time, we really got no one to ask for direction ... when it was really a blessing when we saw a police station where we asked for direction, and finally, we managed to reach the resort safe and sound, plus tired.

Secondly, the service of the staff at the resort is not really that good. Being in a service industry, they should expect that guests might ask questions to find out more about the place, the activities etc. During check-in, when we asked a bit more questions, they showed you the expression that they got a bit restless.

Thirdly, the food is bad !!! It's really a disappointment for me whenever the food is bad. When we checked-in, we were told that breakfast is till 10:30 a.m., however, when we turned up at 10:15 a.m., we were told that we need to pay as we have passed the breakfast time. After much argument, they finally agreed to cook us breakfast for free. Besides being not nice (although edible), this is how they serve us the breakfast ...

Bread not toasted

Fried egg was bad

Baked beans not cooked (cold)

Sausage still taste alright (luckily)

Also, as mentioned in earlier post, food in Cowboy Town is not that great as well, so once again, do have your dinner elsewhere before heading there :)

Nevertheless, despite the above, this is still a place worth going ... perhaps need to research a bit on the direction, and eat elsewhere :)

Animals roam freely, I suppose so, within the limited enclosure. The animals are separated into different zones - there are different zones for tigers, lions, camels, deers, hyenas etc. Believe this is to prevent some from becoming the food of another :p

A 3-minute cruise on a raft, you would reach the Monkey Island. They call it island, but it's a real small island.

Monkeys don't really roam freely here, despite the name given to the island. Perhaps they could be wild at times, so for the sake of everyone's safety, they are kept in cages.

Multi Animal Show

You would be entertained by a host of talented animals, performing tricks such as collecting rubbish and throwing it into the bin (*hmm, so environmentally friendly, learn from them, mate), playing golf, riding a bike etc.

Besides training them up for the tricks, do observe carefully, it's the food that also does the job. Each time the animals have done a trick, they would be rewarded ... so it's the main factor that keeps them going :p

A' Famosa Resort - Cowboy Town

Went to Cowboy Town in the evening of our first day stay there.

You get to experience the so-called days of cowboy here ... rustic buildings, dressed up cowboys and cowgirls, thus the name Cowboy Town :p

Visitors are already being entertained by a group of dancing cowboys and cowgirls even at the entrance to the "town".

The management of A' Famosa is really very good in making money. Once you get into the Cowboy Town area, you get to pose and take photos with animals such as parrot, orang utan, tiger and even python, of course using their camera (you are not allowed to take the shot using your own camera). They would tell you that you do not have the obligation to buy those developed photos ... however a lot of people would end up buying, since how often you get to take an "up close and personal" shot with these animals, right? I am one of those who ended up buying :p

Didn't manage to take too many shots as my camera ran out of battery (argh!!!). Those taken using handphone didn't turn out quite well, thus opt not to share too many photos here.

Had our dinner in the Steak Restaurant there. Food wasn't great, so nothing interesting to share with and comment on. Should have taken dinner outside before getting there :p

The highlight of the evening is of course the Red Indian Show, Animal Musical Parade and Cultural Carnival Show as well as the fireworks.

These performances are great and interesting - I did enjoy them. Rather than using words to explain (which I think I might not be too good at), coupled with not having much photos to show, how about some of the videos taken instead?

A' Famosa Resort - The Place

Have wanted to go for a holiday, even if a short one, since months back. Going overseas is definitely out of the picture as my passport has expired and yet to be renewed :p

Since have not been to A' Famosa Resort in Melaka and there are plans by some friends to go over, why not?

Getting there is actually quite easy, of course, you would need to know the direction. I drove there this round and being bad with roads, I got lost (again!!!). Being a nice person and do not wish anyone getting lost, here's an easy guide on getting there to share with ...

Best to travel via PLUS Highway
Exit at the Simpang Empat Toll
Upon toll exit, turn left at roundabout junction
Turn left again at the 1st major traffic light junction (within 2 km)
Go straight for a further 5 km and you will reach A' Famosa Resort

Embracing the "Total Resort Living Concept", there are quite a number of activities there. For those who enjoy golfing, there's a golf course there. For everyone else, there's the theme park - Water World, Animal World Safari and Cowboy Town for you. Lines of performances and shows are in place for you to enjoy as well :)

Would be sharing some of these pictures (and yes, videos) in a few blog entries that follow. As an "entree", here are some views of the resort, taken from the apartment we stayed.

Connaught Pasar Malam - Try These ...

It's true that Connaught Pasar Malam is a place to go to if you are looking for gastronomic pleasures. Varieties of them to be found there.

Regular kaki lepak there, am sure that you will agree with me :)

Anyway, try these if you ever get to go there ...

Flavoured Tau Foo Fa

Getting bored of the regular conventional tau foo fa?

Then, give this a try - flavoured tau foo fa, which comes in a few flavours - mango, pandan and chocolate ... hope I got it correct, suffering from bad memory (again, argh~).

Being a mango lover, I tried the mango flavoured variant. Quite nice, and also not too sweet.

In terms of price, can be slightly more expensive than the sum that you pay for conventional tau foo fa, but it's still worth paying, at least it's something different :)

Pandan Flavoured Apam Balik

Another flavoured variant to try - pandan flavoured apam balik.

The dough itself is pandan flavoured, which is something different from the conventional apam balik which we used to have. It still comes with normal grounded peanuts and sugar fillings, thus you will still get the conventional apam balik taste, on top of the pandan taste, so don't worry that it will taste "weird".

Having said that, I do feel that something is still missing without the sweet corn fillings. Believe that it would taste better if this is added :)

Price wise ... also a bit more expensive than the price that you would pay for the "normal" apam balik. Well, "something different" stuff will never come cheap, right?

Try it out yourself if you ever go to Connaught Pasar Malam. And for those who have tried the flavoured tau foo fa, kindly help to refresh my memory on the available flavours :)

For the benefit of those who do not understand some of the above terms :

Pasar Malam
= Night Market in Malay language

Tau Foo Fa
= Soy bean pudding dessert, served with sweetened syrup

Apam Balik
= A Malaysian dessert that looks like a thick pancake, with grounded peanuts, sugar and sometimes sweet corn fillings

The Stress of Dealing with PCK Clan

PCK Clan is an unofficial name which I have decided to give to those associated in a way to this profession known as "contractor". This includes (but not limited) to those involve in doing the following to your premise :

1) Renovate
2) Paint
3) Repair & maintain
4) Construct

Trust me, based on past experience, it can be quite stressful dealing with members of this clan.

I gave my house a fresh coat of paint recently, and of course, not being exceptionally good in doing the job myself, have decided to hire someone who is in a better position to get the job done.

And, if you were to ask me whether it is a good experience this time round, my answer is a definite NO. Not trying to make it sounds serious, but am not pleased with the contractor's attitude, whereby he shouted at my mum. Hmm, perhaps those members of this clan have loosen screw and could not control their volume?

Also, it was a one-man's job, whereby this contractor was too stingy to get a helper and decided to get the job done all by himself. Have not much objection on this, however, what made me dissatisfied is he got us to help up instead. Well, I thought we have paid to get the job done?

Experience tells us that we need to keep an eye on their work, which is absolutely true. This contractor was trying his luck by skipping some of the walls and not painting them. We spotted that, of course, and have demanded that he got the job done before we released the final payment.

And before ending, here's a stupid idea to share with ...

Trying to prove his "worth", the contractor insisted to do some railing for us so that we can hang our clothes (according to him "as much as we wish") in our closet. Idea sounds "brilliant" ... but hang on, I nearly fainted when I saw the "output" ...

One side of the wire (those that you use to hang your clothes to dry) is nailed to the top of an old wardrobe (which is not so stable to say) while the other side nailed to the window frame. You call this "brilliant" ... I call it "hopeless".

The best part is he wanted to charge us for this. Well, being a TBA wannabe, obviously am not going to pay even 1 sen for this ... his so-called "masterpiece" being rejected at the end of the day.

Wonder how much aspirin I might have consumed for all the headaches ... if I never refrain myself from doing so.

MIFC 2008 - Spain

Finally this post is up ...

The Malaysia International Fireworks Competition (MIFC) is back and was held from 12 to 29 Aug 2008. This year round Malaysia, China, Canada and Spain participated in the event. Australia, which was last year's winner, also performed on the Finale night.

Unlike last year, the Finale was held on a weekday. Due to busy schedule during that period of time, I could not make it for the Finale. Nevertheless, I would still make it a point to at least turn up for one of the performances.

Managed to make it for the Spain performance, which was on a Saturday. Spain is the winner for this year, so guess have made the right choice to turn up for this ...

... however, it rained on the night of the performance, which in a way "spoil" the outing :(

Nevertheless, did try to take some shots, which unfortunately did not turn out quite well, thus won't be sharing much of these this round.

Practice Makes Perfect?

Since young we have been told to practise regularly in we wish to master a skill, a sports or a subject, perhaps in the hope to perfect it.

Practice makes perfect, this is what they say.

But, think about it realistically, is perfection really achievable?

I used to be in a job and role whereby I spent most of the time reading and writing emails. Besides improving your writing skill via regular practice, it's quite interesting to see how people write.

Some are just bad with their writing skill. Not trying to be bad, but I remember clearly reading emails that are so badly written whereby there is at least a grammatical error in each sentence. You find it quite hard to understand what is being conveyed. However, I managed to understand it at the end of the day. Not any magic required, all you need to do is do a direct translation to Chinese ... and that's it, the message is clear now :p

Having said that, there are some who are very good in their writing skill. Specifically, I enjoy reading emails from one of the counterparts whom I always liaise with. Emails written are just like a piece of art, whereby it is so nicely crafted and written in an artistically way, although not to be equaled to that of Shakespeare.

Having such regular practice, plus such "exposure" to good piece of writing, somehow helps when it comes to writing a blog entry. Ideas and phrases flow continuously like a stream.

In my current new role, which requires more hands-on with the work, I rarely write email as the nature of the role does not require much email writing (well, at least at this juncture this fact holds). As a result of lack of practice, nowadays, I find it took quite a while to finish a blog entry.

So, does practice ever make perfect? Or should I quote it as "practice maintains standard" instead? Since perfection is hard to achieve, I would rather think it from a realistic perspective :)

So, remember to practice lah ... that includes blog more (hopefully) ... and not forgetting my sonatinas :)

When You & Kayaking Just Don't Click

Kayaking, if you need a fair comment from me, all I could say that it is indeed a fun activity not to be missed for those who don't mind having a tan skin thereafter. As for myself, having to have tried it a few times, I do really enjoy it.

Having said that, there are instances when you just do not click with kayaking ... no matter how hard you tried ...

Here are some "real" stories to start with ...

Story 1

This happened to myself, during my 2nd encounter with kayaking in Pulau Pangkor. Having wanted to matchmake 2 of my friends, have decided to share a kayak with a gentleman who is much taller (and obviously heavier) than myself.

Well, made a mistake as I chose to sit at the back of the kayak while the gentleman at the front.

Happily rowing to the middle of the sea when we realised it's about time to return to the beach. That's when the so-called "disaster" happened. As we were rowing against the current, the more we rowed, we realised that instead of rowing towards the beach, we are getting further and further from it, more towards sideways ... guess "almost" reaching Pangkor Laut :p

Ended up both of us got stranded in the middle of the sea. Waited for quite a while before the kayak operators came over to save us ... hmm, what a malufying incident *.*

And, luckily we did not wear sunnies that day (as only both of us within the group wear sunnies), else we would suffer the aftermath of looking either like a panda or an ultraman.

Lesson learnt - Never ever do matchmaking during kayaking ...

Story 2

This "Bollywood" version was told before in one of my post posted last year. For the benefit of those who have not read the earlier post, here's a recollection of what happened.

During the 1st company trip telematch, one of my friends was paired with someone perhaps twice his size, and the worse part is my friend was seated at the back of the kayak ... same old mistake (again) ...

Upon reaching the "invisible line on the seawater", each pair was supposed to turn and row back to the beach. Instead, they had difficulty turning back to the beach ... and end up having "slow spins" instead ... hmm, should I say like a merry-go-round? Perhaps try to imagine a Bollywood kayak scene, and guess you would understand what I meant.

As a result, the Kayak Song was since invented for our dear friend :p

Story 3

This happened to a first-timer with kayaking, during the recent company trip telematch (hmm, what does such incident usually happens during telematch?).

This first-timer just had difficulty getting onto the kayak (don't ask me why) ...

Got up from the left side, immediately fell back to the sea from the right side.
Attempted to get up from the right side, immediately fell back to the sea from the left side.
Again, tried getting up from the left side, immediately fell back to the sea from the right side.
Not giving up, attempted to get up from the right side again, immediately fell back to the sea from the left side.

(Repeat above sequence 10x)

This first-timer attempted getting onto the kayak for 10 minutes, non-stop, but still kept on falling back to the sea. Imagine the McDonald's "M" sign being performed via the above up and fall sequence :p

Having said that, I do salute this first-timer for the persistence shown :)

... Help !!!

While reading the above stories, have you ever noticed what went wrong? Well, am not an expert when it comes to kayaking, but here are some tips to consider to "foster" the necessary "bond" with kayaking :

The stronger person should sit at the back.
The person who knows how to kayak should sit at the back.
The heavier (and bigger size) person should sit at the back.
To turn left, just row at the right side and vice-versa for turning right.

Do give kayaking a try whenever possible, am sure that you would love it !!!

Received the following comments and responses verbally from those who have read the post on Is This Your Cheapskate Friend? posted months back :

1. Oh my God, couldn't believe that such people exist!

Enjoy reading those stories? Well, here are more to share. Ladies and gentlemen, here we go :

Season 2 : Is This Your Cheapskate Friend?

Story 1

We know that it's common for people to charge their mobile phone in the office occasionally when they have forgotten to do so at home.

But, how about if someone charges 2 mobile phones in the office concurrently?

With the increasing electricity rates, guess perhaps this is the strategic way forward?

Story 2

Traveling in a group via MRT. Need to alight at the next stop.

MRT stopped, doors opened. Before you realise it, this bloke, who is also your friend, pushed you aside so that he can alight the MRT before the door closes.

But, what's the hurry?

Story 3

Bought some souvenirs while travelling ~ some snacks and a pair of lovely couple dolls fridge magnet.

Snacks, nowhere to be seen when back to the workplace. Hmm, perhaps those are meant for the family.

Two other colleagues are lucky enough to get a souvenir from this bloke - one person getting the female doll fridge magnet while the other getting the male fridge magnet (*_*)"

Poor loving "couple" being separated involuntarily ...

Story 4

It's once a month family Eating Out Day. It's this bloke's turn to pay for the dinner.

This bloke complained that he is losing out compared to the brother when it comes to his turn to pay.

Why so?

The brother usually brings along his girlfriend to join for the dinner, and this bloke feels "cheated" for paying for the girlfriend's portion.

But how much can the girl eat?

Story 5

Wow, this bloke goes to gym ... despite the expensive monthly subscription (expensive as per the bloke's definition).

But hold on, this bloke is actually using his brother's pass to enter the gym. And this bloke proudly claimed that no one would realise it since both brothers look quite similar.

Well, don't you know how embarrass it would be if the you are caught for this?

Today marked another special day in this century : 8th day of the 8th month of the 8th year of the century, in short 08.08.08.

Besides being special on its own, it's also an easily remembered date, thus believe many would opt to tie their knot today, if they are not being superstitious. According to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, it's still 7th month today, which is considered as not being an auspicious month.

Guess that China itself does not consider this day as being inauspicious as today is the opening ceremony of the long awaited Beijing Olympic. 08.08.08 at 8 p.m., being the time when the ceremony will kick start.

Missed the beginning part of the ceremony, as I was still on the way back from work when it kicked start (was in fact on a whole day meeting today). Missed the fireworks performance (*argh).

For those who have watched the opening ceremony live on TV, am sure that you would totally agree with me that the performance was superbly fantastic. Am truly fascinated with how they combine China's 5,000 years of culture with technological advances to come out with something which is just spectacular.

At the point of posting this entry, the performance has yet to finish. I believe that there would be another round of firework performance at the end of the opening ceremony. Well, at least to compensate what I have missed at the beginning :p

It's Grade 2

Attended my first music lesson last Sunday. Went through the simple audit process on the day itself to determine the appropriate grade.

Was given a piece which is equivalent to Grade 5 for practising. As for theory, my teacher said that she will let me try Grade 5 as well.

I shall then conclude that it's Grade 5 for both practical and theory. Hmm, not too bad ... since I have lost touch with the 88 keys for more than a decade by now :)

Having said that, class duration is a bit too short ~ just a 30-minutes slot to cover both practical and theory. Seems that the music school has made a slight mistake by assuming that I am taking Grade 2 for both. Fees payable, of course, is those for Grade 2.

From simple CBA perspective, am I better off, since am paying for Grade 2 but getting a Grade 5 lesson?

FYI, CBA = Cost Benefit Analysis :)

Farewell & Appreciation

Didn't expect to attend a couple of farewell lunch and dinner, and they are all for my farewell !!! Of course, having to have enjoyed the meal, it's time for appreciation now :)

Do agree that this appreciation note is sort of belated in nature ... have wanted to write it much earlier but I had difficulty accessing this blog site few days back ~ not trying to explain, but it's really the fact :p

Anyway, here's a list of appreciation note ...

Farewell # 1
@ Ikan Bakar Jalan Bellamy, behind Istana Negara

It's supposed to be one of the "makan" wish list to be fulfilled, however, it ended up being my 1st farewell lunch.

Needless to say, really love the ikan bakar there, especially the hot and spicy sambal. It was raining on the day we went, whereby such weather is perfectly fine for ikan bakar, thus it's only hot when it comes to the sambal, but not the weather.

Farewell # 2
@ Restoran Taipei Village, Bandar Puchong Jaya

Another "makan" wish list to be fulfilled, i.e. "Restoran Ren Jian Wei" as stated in the post on "Makan" Wish List, which have also been chosen for my farewell lunch. Have not been to Taiwan, thus am not in a position to judge on the authenticity of the Taiwanese food here.

Food served looks more like homecook food. Love the deep-fried tauhu as well as pork fillet.

A bit disappointed with the dessert though. We had sweet potato, which is coated with a layer of maltose syrup. We need to soak the sweet potato in ice water to harden the maltose syrup into candy. For this time round, the coat of maltose syrup on the sweet potato is not thick enough, which makes the candy "less crunchy".

Nevertheless, it's the sweet thought that counts. Thanks to ...

@ Restoran Bibi Wok, Bandar Puteri Puchong

It is a big group of us flanking to Bibi Wok for the farewell lunch - 17 of us !!!

Bibi Wok is a place that you can consider when you crave for Thai as well as Nyonya food. Nice place with nice food, and at reasonable price.

The organisers for this lunch did a good job by placing an order for the food beforehand, thus we did not need to wait long for our food to be served. Really love the assam prawn, pandan chicken, mango salad (can't remember all though) ... and yes, the dessert as well :)

@ Flying Chillies, The Gardens

Another round of Thai food, which I don't mind, since I love Thai cuisine. Went to Flying Chillies for farewell dinner on my last day with the organisation.

Ambience was good, a nice place for a good meal. The tomyam "kicks" ... i.e. it gives the "umph" feeling that you wish to get when having tomyam.

There are supposed more of us turning up for the dinner, however, due to unforseen circumstances, four could not make it. Guess it would be merrier when there are more of us there.

Anyway, would like to thank my boss ...

A last minute "farewell" at a place which I could not really remember. Here's the history ... I actually owed someone for a meal which that person has paid first weeks back. Due to busy schedule, have always forgotten to pay that person back.

First of August

First of August ... first day at new workplace ... new environment, new colleagues, new hope ...

My new workplace is much further than the old one. Traffic flow could be hard to judge, thus I left my house much earlier than usual. Moreover, do not wish to be late on the first day at work ~ a bad impression and perception would be built if I were late.

In fact, reached office by half an hour earlier (*yes, a good start!!!).

As usual, when you are new in a company, the first few days would be devoted to orientation. In other words, nothing to do today, besides spending time reading up orientation folder as well as settling down (access card, parking pass etc).

Had a "welcome" lunch with my colleagues from the same department. Was quite happy for the treat from my new boss :)

There would definitely be a lot for me to learn ~ different business process, job scope as well as system used ... looking forward to those challenges as well as learning.

Hope the momentum will last, and won't end up in a state as shown in the following diagram ...

By the way, don't take the above diagram too seriously. It is just a metamorphosis process, being told in a funny way :p
